Keeping in view the increasing cold and fog situations in Punjab, the government has extended winter vacations in the state. Winter vacations in Punjab, as declared by the government, will be upto January 14, 2026.
Attending school, colleges, and other educational institutes in the freezing cold is quite difficult, and it will hamper the health of students. Hence, the government has opted for a winter break. The holidays, however, have been announced in two phases. Twenty-four districts of Punjab will observe the holidays from December 23 to January 6. Another twelve districts will observe the holidays from January 3 to January 13. The schools will most likely open from January 15, as stated by the Union HRD minister.
The notification for the winter holidays should be followed by all private and government schools of Punjab. Moreover, there are certain guidelines issued by the Punjab Government that should be duly adhered to by all government and non-governmental institutions.
Winter Vacations in Punjab 2025-2026
As mentioned above, the winter vacations in the state of Punjab are declared in two phases. The first phase will follow the holidays from December 23 to January 6, and the other phase will observe the holidays from January 3 to January 13 2025. The government has taken this decision in view of the winter conditions. Students find it difficult to attend early morning classes in such extreme cold, which also can affect their health badly. Students form a crucial part of the country’s treasure. Hence the authorities can’t risk their health.
The Punjab Government has announced holidays for schools, both private and non-private. The schools on the dates as mentioned above will remain closed. The winter holiday list is applicable for all schools under the CBSE board, ICSE board and also Punjab board.
The government has also ensured that after the reopening, all the teaching staff and non-teaching staff of all the schools should be fully vaccinated.

Based on a notification declared by the School Education Department on Tuesday, all private and public educational institutions in some cities will follow winter holidays from December 23 to January 6. The smog levels in certain districts are higher than others hence the decision has been taken on that note.
Additionally, educational institutes in cities where smog levels are lower, are going to follow fall holidays from January 3 to 13 2026, and in the meanwhile will continue the ongoing vaccination drive in schools.
In the past week, Minister for Education Punjab Murad Raas has announced that schools, both public and private — across the province should observe the winter vacations from December 23 to January 6.

Reopening of Classes in Punjab
Earlier this year, the Punjab government declared the reopening of classes from August 2. All educational institutes are ordered to follow proper covid protocols. Rules for reopening of classes are as follows-

- Schools will run with 50% capacity.
- Everyone should implement the directives from the MHA/ State Govt.
